The fitness activities we choose can say a lot about who we are. Do you love working out in a gym full of people and participating in team sports? Or maybe you’d rather go for a run at 6:00 a.m. before anyone else is out, or following along with an exercise video with only your pets around to watch you. Our personality types have a strong influence on our fitness habits, whether we realize it or not.
A recent article in U.S. News sheds interesting light on what motivates us to gravitate towards certain kinds of workouts over others. A study on “fitness personality” identified 7 different characteristics. Where we fall on the scale for each one can determine what workouts we like...and which ones we avoid. They are:
- Mental Focus
Not surprisingly, certain physical activities are favored by each personality type. For example, karate enthusiasts tend to be competitive, runners are self-motivated, yoga practitioners are focused, and aerobics class fans are social.
What workout suits your personality type? If you’re social and competitive, then team sports, martial arts, and group training are for you. Are you the shy, retiring type? Then you might prefer swimming, tai chi, and yoga. Risk takers gravitate towards things like mountain biking and rock climbing, while risk avoiders prefer walking and cardio conditioning.
